Born as the eldest and illegitimate son of Pope Gregorio XXX, Francesco started his work for the church in the military, following the example of his father's younger brother Alfonso D'Este, by becoming the head of the Holy Office of the Inquisition at the age of 25, a few months before being promoted to the rank of a Cardinal.
A year later, Pope Gregorio XXX passes away and together with his half-sister Caterina Sforza, Francesco supports his half-brother Alessandro, the late Pope's legitimate son, in the Papal Elections against their uncle Alfonso D'Este. After Alessandro's victory and election, Francesco becomes the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, but only gives up his position as the Inquisition leader four years later to his successor Pietro Orsini, better known as Brother Peter, and thus retires from the field in order to concentrate on his tasks as a Cardinal and advisor of the Pope.

Known for his short temper, his militaristic views, brutal tactics, and extreme devotion to both faith and country, he is clearly more of a military than of a politician, and while the younger Cardinals are easily captured by his forceful personality, charisma, and passionate speeches, the more experienced ones are more inclined to side with his political rival, Caterina. He is prone to outbursts of anger during political meetings, and shouting could be considered his "indoor voice". His hatred for heresy and vampires is nearly unmatched. As a former Inquisition soldier, his demeanour and mannerism often seems unfitting for a Cardinal. He is described with a personality "ready to strike back at the slightest touch", quick to suggest military strikes of retaliation and to sacrifice the lives of criminals and innocents, enemies and allies alike. However, he is honest in his devotion, and as a fighter used to stand in the front line, just as willing to lay his life down for state and church. This is the reason why he violently refuses any negotiation with terrorists or vampires, and even goes as far as to invade countries with his political allies to use their ressources for their Holy Mission - a crusade against the Empire which he desperately tries to push forward.

Although he is mostly fighting with Caterina over political issues or shouting at Alessandro in attempts to convince him of his opinions and bring him to acting as the example the Pope should be for his church, Francesco is deeply and sincerely concerned about his siblings. While this may not show all too openly, he puts all rivalry with Caterina aside and grants her longer periods of time to solve things her way than he would have to, asks her to return home from journeys when they start to seem too dangerous, or - after her refusal - sends his best men along with troops and equipment (including tanks and airships) to protect her after an attack. However, as much as he can overreact like this in his worry, he has a clear stance that they as a Cardinal and Pope have the duty to live and die for the Church, which is why he has his men investigate when it seems that Caterina's AX agents are involved in questionable matters, and which is why he would mourn Alessandro's death, but still continue his work and assume the leader position in Alessandro's stead.

Important Relationships (Series):

milanbutterfly (Caterina): A typically paradox relationship, as described above. He is protective of her and has some family ties he only subconciously lets slip (by always calling her by her name instead title, even during political meetings), but at the same time has a keen eye on her political moves. He is not pleased at all by her influence on Alessandro, as he both considers her pampering the Pope too much, not helping the need for him to grow up and act as a political figure - and because his own and Caterina's political views, though alike in some other points, in their approach of the vampire-question could hardly differ more. While concerned about Caterina's safety and often annoyed at her bringing herself in danger unnecessarily, he is clearly aware that on a purely political level, he has to and will treat her no better or worse than anybody else; meaning, should she be guilty of treason, he will see that she is tried for it, with no regards to family relationships, and as a political rival, he would appreciate having her removed from her office.

papalpuppet (Alessandro): While clearly less emotional than with Caterina, Francesco's relationship to Alessandro is - from his own eyes - not a negative one, either. However, Alessandro is in a position and at an age where his weakness is intolerable. Where Caterina tries the more gentle approach, Francesco is convinced that hardness and pressure are the best teachers and will help Alessandro to grow up. Completely contrary to how he adresses Caterina, Francesco never calls Alessandro by name, but adresses him in the formal manner as "your Holiness". Since Francesco is not the type to infantilise or belittle those he feels responsible for or close to, he has no tolerance for Alessandro's need for understanding and compassion, and neither for Caterina granting it.

prof_wordsworth (William): Although not too familiar with or close to the Professor in any way, there is a certain antipathy and sense of rivalry between them from Francesco's side, since just as he considers Caterina a bad influence on Alessandro, he considers William a bad influence on Caterina.

teeny_tiny_tres (Tres): He doesn't have much of an opinion about Tres, only that ~~his own HC-unit is superior~~ Tres may cause the Vatican financial trouble at times by destroying everything around him on his missions, but serves as a reliable protection for Caterina and Alessandro at least.
